FebIncrease In Transport Fares Loom As Minister Engages Various Unions
The Government of Ghana is in discussions with various transport unions across the country over a possible adjustment of transport fares.
The development comes following a persistent rise in fuel prices and spare parts since the turn of the year.
According to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU), the threshold for fare increments has been met and it is now up to the government to make a decision.
The new Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has assured all relevant stakeholders that a reasonable outcome will be arrived at when he engages leaders of the various transport unions in the coming days.
During a working visit to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Accra on Monday, February 10, 2025, the minister told reporters: “Tomorrow, we will be engaging them and so I wouldn’t want to say anything about them till I have fully engaged them. But they are cooperating. If you watch over the news portals, you will see that they have written to their colleagues to give us some time, meaning that we are in the process of having a better understanding as to how much they would charge our passengers.
“So we are talking with them. Tomorrow, we will continue and do not want to make anything public because they are not here. I have their trust that they will work with us and we will get to some agreement or to some level that will be beneficial to all of us.”
